부재의 아카이브
내가 둔촌주공아파트를 알게 된 것은 2012년 고등학교를 단지 옆의 동북고등학교로 배정받으면서부터였다. 학교로 가는 가장 빠른 방법은 단지를 가로질러 가는 것이었고, 그것이 인연이 되어서 나는 2015년부터 이곳을 기록하기 시작했다. 2017년 둔촌주공아파트는 재건축을 위한 관리처분 인가를 받았고 아파트가 위치한 둔촌 1동이 서울에서 가장 인구가 적은 행정동이 되는 데에는 그로부터 1년도 채 걸리지 않았다.
이번 작업은 이주가 끝난 아파트의 풍경과 아파트에서 수집된 물품들로 나누어지는 두 갈래의 이미지들로 구성되어 있다. 이미지 속의 대상들은 대부분 나의 경험과 동떨어져 있는 것들이다. 이제 아파트는 완전히 철거되었고 남겨진 이미지들은 부재에 대한 기념비가 되었다. 나는 이것들을 보다 직관적으로 재구성함으로써 내가 경험하지 못한 대상에 얽힌 다양한 이야기들을 엿보고자 한다.
The Archive of Absence
The first time I heard about Dunchon Jugong Apartments was in 2012 when I was assigned to go to Dongbuk High School located next to the apartment complex. The quickest way to get to school was to cut through the apartment complex which led me to begin documenting the place in 2015. This apartment complex obtained management disposal permission for reconstruction in 2017, and Dunchon 1-dong had less than one year to become an administrative district with the smallest population in Seoul.
This work consists of two types of images: scenes of apartments after all of the residents had left and pictures of objects that were gleaned from the apartments. The objects are mostly far away from my own experience. The apartments have since been completely torn down and these left behind images have become monuments in their absence. I try to lay out a variety of narratives about these objects I have never experienced through their intuitive reconstruction.
